1. Whatever you do, don't cancel your credit cards. Though this seems like the best way to prevent yourself from using them, lenders want to see that you can handle your credit responsibly. Keep your 2 oldest credit cards (trade lines). the longer you have a trade line with good payment history the better for your credit score.

2. Follow the 2/2/2 rule. this very simply is that have 2 trade lines for 2 years with a minimum balance of $2,000. Following this rule means that you pay both of these credit cards on time each month for 2 years and staying within the $2,000 limit.

3. Use your credit cards regularly - with care. These two trade lines need to be actively used. Have monthly payments like your cellphone or Netflix be attached to your credit cards. If you're concerned about getting into debt or not making your payments on time, pay off the balance as you make your purchases.
